Season 2 Episode 11: The Snow Must Go On

Welcome back to the First World Podcast.  Greg was unable to make it to recording this week, so we rocked it as a power trio.  It is winter, and in St. Louis, it has started to be cold as balls, so we figured it would be a good time to talk about snow levels.  Heath got another Humble Bundle and was playing Rymdkapsel.  Dan beat The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, so he picked up on sale Shin Megami Tensei IV.  Madison took advantage of a holiday sale and got a new laptop and played some games.  We wrap up the episode with our FDA* approved Triple Barrel Shotgun Round. This week we ask the question; What in video games are you thankful for?  Let us know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.

Check out Physics Punk Pedals who custom built Heath a kick ass Bit Crusher pedal with custom Link graphics on it, for Solid State Disaster.  It totally rules!  Here are his store https://squareup.com/market/physics-punk-pedals

Welcome back to the First World Podcast.  PlayStation 4 came out on Friday, Xbox One, or the Xbone as we so lovingly call it, comes out this Friday.  We figured we would talk about the response of the PS4 and the expectations of the Xbone.  Dan couldn't make it to the podcast this week, so, Brett Aldrich stepped in to tell us a little Android title called Aquaria.  Heath dug into Shadowrun Returns, and gives some advice on how to make money on GTA5. Greg also played Shadowrun Returns, and is starting to have a better time with Disgaea.  Madison is still chipping away at Pokemon, but went back to Dragon's Crown.  We finish up the episode with a new segment called the Way Back Machine where we talk about some of our favorite classics.  For our debut game, we went with the ever popular Super Mario Bros. 3.

Welcome back to the First World Podcast.  This week we are tackling the legacy of The Legend of Zelda.  Madison is slowly progressing through Pokemon Y and Disgaea D2, and finally played a newer game, Front Mission 4.  Heath played the lack luster Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate, and the wonderful Tiny Death Star.  Dan played Batman Arkham Origins, and encountered a ton of bugs, which is really too bad for such a great game.  Greg played a bunch of games, but really wanted to dig into Blizzcon this week.  We wrap up the episode with a very secret revealing Triple Barrel Shotgun Round.  This weeks question is; What is your favorite unannounced next gen console feature?

Episode 50: Fifty Shades of Great

Well folks, we made it.  Far beyond our initial expectations, the First World Podcast has made it to the tender age of 1 year old!  It has been a wild ride, and we couldn't have done this with out you, yes you, the listener.  This episode, we changed the format a bit.  We kick off the episode with a year in retrospect on the show, telling you some secrets that started the show, and what have kept it alive.  Followed up by a great interview with ex-Lucas Arts QA tester Tammy Williamson, a follow up from episode 27.  Next, we do and extended Inbox 360 segment, were we answer all of your question.

Now for the surprise we have been hinting at.  This episode we would like to introduce our new segment, Hall of Game.  Over the course of this year, we have played some amazing games.  One of them stuck out miles above the rest, and that game was called Faster Than Light.  So, in order to properly celebrate FTL's induction to the Hall of Game, Dan and Heath had a Skype interview with FTL co-developer Justin Ma.  We wrap up the episode with our thanks, and if we missed someone, please forgive us, so many of you have contributed in some way over the course of the year.

The time was 10:00 AM on a Sunday morning, and the First World Podcast crew gathered for a special, early morning episode of the First World Podcast.  This week we had a rousing discussion on the price points of consoles and video games.  Dan played the Legend of Fae, but spent most of his time being excited about the 2DS.  Greg dug deeper in to the reborn world of Final Fantasy 14: A Relm Reborn.  Madison caught some more Pokemon, and scared herself half to death with the Silent Hill HD Collection.  Heath didn't play anything new, but he did spend some time with his comfort food, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.  We wrapped up this early episode with another installment of Random Encounters, and we need your help to break a tie;  Who would win in this battle, Optimus Prime vs. Jeff (from Earthbound) ?  Let us know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.

Welcome back to another action packed episode of the First World Podcast. This week the grumble of gamers takes a quit trip down memory lane for a retrospective on Sony and the Playstation brand . Greg plays "the greatest sci-fi game of all time" and Heath plays the worst FF7 spin-off with Crisis Core.

Finally we debut a new segment we call "1 out of 10", where the worst games we have ever played are discussed for both amusement and as a stark warning to all our listener friends.

Episode 46: Hands Holding Hands

Dan's back bitches!!! And so is the First World Podcast.  With Madison's recent badass birthday haul, walking away with a sexy blue 3DS XL, we decided that it would be appropriate to talk about Handhelds again.  Madison had an all portable week and played a ton of Pokemon White Ver. 2.  Dan, after borrowing Greg's Vita, got to play Gravity Rush while he was on vacation, but was instantly distracted when he got home by Duck Tales Remastered.  Heath and Greg had a very different week in gaming then Dan and Madison, they got totally lost by the Magic The Gathering game on PC, because it is fantastic.  We finished the episode with a very silly Triple Barrel Shotgun Round where we asked the question;  What intellectual property would you like to be made into a game?  What type of game would that be?  Let us know what you would want in the comments below.
Every kids (and adults) dream....

In a couple of episodes we are going to be celebrating our one year anniversary of the First World Podcast, and we would like you guys to give us some input on what you would like us to do for the shindig.  So, feel free to write us, leave us comments, tweet, or Facebook your suggestions.

Heath and Madison went to Sonic Boom 2013 and got to play Sonic Lost World before it comes out later this year.  Madison had a killer birthday, and got a 3DS XL, and also filled her need for arcade beat 'em up's with Dragons Crown.  Greg, being inspired with the pc game Magic 2014, started playing the regular old school card game Magic the Gathering.  We wrap up the episode with a very relevant Triple Barrel Shotgun Round, where we ask the question; Which video game have you spent too much time on?  Let us know in the comments below or on our Facebook page

Episode 41: Digital Pizza the 2nd

Welcome back to another exciting episode of the First World Podcast.  This week we planned on doing a different topic, but the summer Steam sale derailed us, and brought us back to the topic of digital distribution.  Heath had a full week of gaming and beat The Last of Us, also got to check out The Walking Dead: 400 Days.  Dan took full advantage of the iOS App Store anniversary and played all 5 of the free games, but really loved Where's My Water. No, seriously, he really liked it.  Madison filled her time while downloading all of her Steam games with a tower defense game called Revenge of the Titans, and finished up her week with Boarderlands 2.   Greg, also took advantage of the Steam sale, and got a special MMO called The Secret World.  We skipped doing a Triple Barrel Shotgun Round, or a Inside the Gamers Studio, to do a new segment we called Mailbox 360, where we read some of the great letters we got for episode 40 All That Violence.

Retro Repurposing: NESputer

By Madison Davis

This is my attempt at using an old skool NES as the case for a modern computer.
Everything you need... Sort of.
 Parts used for this build:

CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor   100.00
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A75M-ITX Mini ITX  FM2 Motherboard  90.00
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory 60.00
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  80.00
Power Supply: Athena Power 400W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Mini ITX Power Supply  80.00 (not pictured.  I purchased this micro ATX power supply but it was just too big to fit in my build.  I returned it and ordered a smaller power supply).
Total: $410.00

I also purchased a few parts here and there as I needed them, such as a 40mm fan, fan grill, power/reset buttons, power and hdd LED.

Parts already in my posession:
Windows 7 home premium and 500gb hdd.

I became close friends with my Dremel.  Had to gut the Nes to make room for its new parts!

Because of the large amount of parts I was shoving in this case, I decided to place the hard drives under the motherboard. The hard drives pictured are just a few small capacity I had laying around to use as a mock up instead of risking damage to my SSD.  I separated the hard drives from the motherboard with crafting foam to avoid any shorting out.
Using the NES buttons with shiny new switches
Dremeled out the area for the back plate.  Fits like a glove!

Fitting The top with the bottom.  Also, cut out the spot for the power supply.  This was an extremely tight fit, I had to do a ton a sanding to allow the case to close properly with the PSU.  I also utilized the venting on the top of the case, opened it up a bit for better airflow and allowed it to be used as an intake.

Look at all those wires!  Tsk tsk.  Messy!

So I cut down the power supply wires and soldered it all back together. First time soldering anything, I am very proud of myself!

I cut a vent in the top of the case right above the CPU fan, I was heavily concerned about heat and airflow.
It runs cool enough now with lid closed.  I added the HDD activity light under the lid as well as the case badges proudly showing my quad core AMD and SSD.  I ended up breaking the original red LED so I used a yellow one that I had laying around for the power. light.  I added a 40mm fan where the controller ports used to be.

A screenshot of some of her specs, she runs fast and stays cool!  I have her hooked up to the TV in my living room, when people see her they are at first surprised I have an NES hooked up and then they realize she is not a run-of-the-mill NES.

This was my first time attempting anything even remotely like this.  I've seen some of the NES computers online, but never anything as powerful as a quad core.  Making space was definitely a challenge and it took me about 6-8 hours of labor to get everything cut and fitted.  I'm sure I could have done it faster but I really had no idea what I was doing.

Enjoy

Episode 40: All That Violence

Welcome back to the First World Podcast.  This week we try to tackle the divisive topic of violence in video games.  We came no closer to solving any of the arguments for, or against violence, but we had a great time admitting the things that make us squeamish, and the things that we are for.  Madison picked up the Ico/Shadows of the Colossus HD collection and helped explain why video games are art.  Dan started his ride through the highly stylized Bayonetta, he got lost on the story, but loves the action.  We do something a little unconventional as Greg, Heath, and Dan all played Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and all have very different experiences with it.  Heath wraps up Now Playing with joining Greg and his dissent of The Last of Us.  We wrap up the show with part 2 in a 4 part series of Inside the Gamers Studio, this week we focus on Greg.

Even the villager is getting violent!
